Fall into Fall 2000
Sept.17, 2000
I was up at 5 AM this morning and saw Orion blazing in the sky
the harginger of FALL
this afternoon,
Wade Park Oval, the first hint of FALL
yellow in the treetops.
Leaves soon will FALL
SUN WIND GRAVITY
an insect that looks like a thorn
ants, bees, foot torturing acorns under the trees
supple field of grass, soft
the good earth supporting
me in the middle
pushing down
pushing up
flying Colleen in the sky
where she dances with the barefoot wind

I danced at the Contact Improvisation Jam today by myself. “Contact” is usually done with a partner, but I wasn’t lonely. I had the floor, and I had gravity, and I had my own sensations of moving, and I had my voice.
I fell into the floor, rolled slowly, feeling the surface area of my body contacting the floor, feeling my breath. The chatter in my head quieted down…I touched something deeper…I cried. I remember thinking about God-as a concept-as perfection-as a being (maybe not really a “being”) that I prefer to call Goddess-as the perfection that is proven by all the imperfection around us. Leaving, I felt relaxed, content.

We’ve been jammin’ in Cleveland since 1982-pretty consistently. It all started when Laura Chapman moved back to Cleve, after having danced in the first contact improv performance at John Weber Gallery in NYC with Steve Paxton and others. She was pumped to have other people to dance with and started teaching. The rest is history.
If you come to our jams, you’ll have the opportunity to dance with me and Larry-who have been dancing together since then. (wow, that’s over 25 years!) We’re happy to share what we know with whomever shows up, so come dance!
